What is Freemasonry?
Freemasonry is the oldest fraternal organization in the world. It is a voluntary association of men, a system of moral conduct, a way of life, and religious in character. Freemasonry is based on a firm belief in The Fatherhood of God, The Brotherhood of Man, and the Immortality of the Soul.

How is Freemasonry organized?
The Grand Lodge is the governing body for a specific jurisdiction, usually a state. Freemasonry is organized into lodges referred to as Blue Lodges, and are chartered by that jurisdiction’s Grand Lodge. The lodges are referred to as “Blue” as a symbolic reference of the heavens under which lodges conduct their work. Meetings are usually held twice a month, ten months a year.

What do the Masons do?
Masons promote personal development by reinforcing moral principals. Masons believe in equality and fraternity, regarding all men by the nature of their character, rather than their material or external manifestations. Masons assist those suffering unfortunate circumstances through charity and contribution. This just introduces you to the good works of masonry. Who is the head of Freemasonry?
There is no one single head of Freemasonry. In England, the governing body is the United Grand Lodge of England, in the United States, each state has its own Grand Lodge, and there is not a ‘national’ Grand Lodge.

Is Freemasonry a religion?
No, Freemasonry is religious in character, but contains no religious teachings. Meetings are usually opened and closed with prayer, and a Sacred Volume of the Law (usually The Holy Bible) is present.

Is Freemasonry a secret society?
No. Freemasonry is not a secret society. Secret societies try to hide and deny their existence. Masonic lodges are well marked with signs and list their addresses and numbers (if available) in the local phone directories. The only exception would be in countries where the political climate would not allow Freemasons to meet openly.

Is Freemasonry political?No. Peace and Harmony being precepts of masonry, the discussion of politics in its lodges is strictly prohibited.

Why do Masons wear an “apron”?
The leather or lambskin apron symbolizes innocence and is the badge of a Mason. Masons wear a lambskin apron to remind them of the purity of life and conduct that is necessary to gain entrance into heaven.

What are the Masonic “degrees”?
Masonic degrees are lessons of Masonic history and moral conduct and they indicate a level of membership in the lodge. Each degree has a specific ritual with specific significance to the meaning of that degree. The blue lodge consists of three degrees, Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason.

Who can become a Freemason?
The requirements may vary slightly from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, but in Wisconsin the following are requirements:
•Must be male. Be 18 years of age or older.
•Be of high moral character.
•Be of sound mind and body.
•Profess a belief in one Supreme Being.
•Must come of own freewill.
•Be patriotic.
